Site Overview
Video: U-FMG CLSC Métro Overview
CLSC Métro has served the population of downtown Montreal for over forty years. It has been a popular site for McGill students and residents throughout its history. It became a full McGill Family Medicine residency site in 2012. As of 2024, an average of 11.5 learners are present at the site each period including 8 Family Medicine residents based at the site for their two years of training.
Highlights
- Conveniently located in the heart of downtown Montreal in a multilingual and international neighbourhood with a diverse urban patient population
- Integrated with CLSC services (home care, maternal-child health, mental health)
- A small site with a close-knit team of staff and resident doctors
- Morning teaching rounds every day before clinic
Facilities and Resources
- Facilities: The clinical space encompasses a floor in a downtown office building above the Métro station. We have a functioning testing centre on site. There is a well-equipped room for medical procedures.
- Technology and Resources: Our teaching room is in daily use for teaching and reviewing cases. The site is equipped with cameras and direct viewing is part of our culture.
Teaching
Training programs offered: Our site receives students in all stages of their training from the first-year longitudinal family medicine experiences to fourth-year electives. We receive a regular rotation of two clerks per month. Four family medicine residents per year are accepted into our residency training program. We also receive residents from Psychiatry (postgraduate year [PGY] 1) and Dermatology (PGY 2) as well as from Family Medicine Enhanced Skills (PGY 3) for comprehensive and continuity-of-care clinical experiences.
Types of learning experiences: Students gain experience in common acute and chronic conditions that present to a family physician’s office. Our residents are prepared for independent practice as family physicians in the community. This is achieved through guidance in their clinical practices in the CLSC (including general practice resident clinics, procedure clinics, IUD/implant clinics, obstetrics clinic, well baby clinic, home visits) and through their more focused hospital experiences. Residents inherit a panel of patients when they start their residency and follow them longitudinally
Community and Engagement
- Community Description: The population in downtown Montreal includes people from many ethnic backgrounds and all ages. In 2024, the surrounding Peter McGill electoral district had a population of 35,789 people, which included 22,260 first generation immigrants with 27.6% speaking a non-official language at home. Local housing units of 1 bedroom (or less) dominate the real estate market and influence the movement of people and families in and out of the neighbourhood. Care is taken to balance a resident’s practice to ensure that there is a mix of ages and health issues. The clinic has a tradition of treating a diversity of individuals according to their medical need and aims to reduce barriers in achieving health equity.
- Engagement Activities: Some physicians are involved in home care services to the local population.
Learner Testimonials
“I had an amazing LFME [longitudinal family medicine] experience. Physicians and nurses have been extremely accommodating and flexible in accepting me in their practice. The CLSC gave me the opportunity to be in contact with a very diverse population: from homeless persons to Westmount residents and university students. I have come to appreciate how important it is to identify and understand the possible social determinants at stake when interacting with patients, especially in a family medicine setting.”
