On average, how big can I expect my class sizes to be?
Class sizes vary depending on the course. For example, if you are taking freshmen courses such as Math, Physics, or Chemistry, you can expect very large class sizes (anywhere from 200-600 students).
In terms of your Engineering courses, you can expect larger class sizes at the beginning of your program, with decreasing sizes as you progress. For example, your 200 level courses and some of your 300 level courses may have anywhere from 100-200 students, whereas most of your 300 and 400 level courses will reduce in size (60-90 students typically).
Technical complementary courses, which are taken in the final years of your degree, can have even lower numbers, depending on the course (30-50 students on average).
What kind of computer should I have to be able to complete coursework in Engineering?
We recommend a computer running Windows 11 with at least an Intel i5 or i7 processor (or equivalent), 32 GB of RAM, and a 1 TB solid‑state drive (SSD).
For programs that use graphics‑intensive software, a dedicated graphics card (such as NVIDIA or AMD) can be helpful. However, most students can complete their coursework without one. Campus lab computers are available for applications that require higher performance.
Some programs may have additional or specialized requirements. Please consult your department or program advisor to confirm specific needs.
Apple (macOS) computers are not recommended, as many engineering applications are not fully compatible with macOS.

What are U0 and U1 students?
U0 students: U0 includes students admitted with: Advanced Levels (A-Levels), Advanced Placement (AP), French Baccalaureate, International Baccalaureate (IB), and university transfers.
Most students in these categories (admitted to the Faculty of Engineering) receive fewer than 24 advanced standing credits, and are therefore classified as U0.
U1 students: Mostly all CEGEP-admitted students enter McGill Faculty of Engineering with a minimum of 24 credits of advanced standing from CEGEP.
Because they have at least 24 credits, they are automatically classified as U1. All CEGEP students must follow the CEGEP curriculum set by their department.
