The Buddy Program

For international students who are unfamiliar with Montreal or the North American lifestyle, moving to McGill can be a daunting experience.

To help you settle in to your new life in Montreal, we offer the Buddy Program, which pairs new international students with current students who provide the friendly face, helping hand, and first Montreal friendship that can make a world of difference for new arrivals.

The Buddy Program offers new students:

Typical activities might include:

  • linguistic support

  • cultural guidance

  • information about life at McGill

  • showing international students around campus
  • locating banks and grocery stores near the University
  • helping with an apartment search
  • meeting up to chat over a cup of coffee

The Buddy Program has helped thousands of international students — more than 750 last year — settle into McGill and Montreal.

Volunteers and new students are paired starting in May for the Fall academic term, allowing new students to be in touch with their buddies over the summer should they chose to do so.

There is no hard deadline for signing up, although it's important for both volunteers and new students to sign up before the term begins in order to ensure a smooth pairing.
