SP0005: La Cave Bike Collective

Status: COMPLETED August 2010 - September 2010

La Cave is a volunteer-run bike collective located at McGill University’s Solin Hall Residence. Established in August 2010 with funding from the Sustainable Projects Fund, La Cave provides residents with free access to tools and expertise for bike maintenance and repair, and promotes cycling as a sustainable, affordable, and fun way to travel in Montreal.

La Cave provides a space for people to repair and maintain their bikes with the help of knowledgeable volunteers, free tools and discounted parts. Volunteer mechanics are always on hand to provide free advice and expertise to cyclists. In addition, La Cave also runs tutorials throughout the year with the goal of educating Solin residents on cycling safety, repair, preparing their bikes for winter conditions, and other bike-related topics.

Solin Hall is located in St. Henri, which makes commuting to campus a bit harder for Solin residents. As such, La Cave believes that all Solin residents would benefit from owning a bike, as cycling offers a cheaper and more sustainable alternative to cars and public transit. The goal of La Cave is to make it as easy as possible for Solin residents to acquire, maintain, and enjoy using bikes as their primary mode of transportation to McGill and around Montreal.
