McGill's Greenhouse Gas Inventory

Published: 13 March 2017

McGill University manages a stock of buildings of over 600,000 m² which are on average fifty years of age and older.  A leader in education and research, McGill is characterized by very research-intensive activities, a travelling population, and high energy intensity.

In 2015 McGill emitted 54,062 tonnes of CO2e.  This is the equivalent emissions from 11,420 cars in one year.  The University has already reduced absolute greenhouse gas emissions 25% below the 1990 levels (45% reduction per full-time equivalent student).  McGill is now working on a plan to further reduce its environmental impact and align with government’s targets.
