Once you’ve been accepted to the Work Study program, it’s time to apply for jobs!
- Browse job postings in myFuture: Work Study positions are located on campus or in surrounding facilities and are designed to fit around your academic schedule.
- Apply for jobs: Include your Work Study confirmation letter in your job application. International students should refer to Work and Permits for important information on working during your studies.
- Get hired and make a schedule: Decide on a work schedule with your employer. We recommend no more than 15 hours of work per week.
McGill’s Career Planning Service can help you polish up your resume and cover letter!
Your Responsibilities
If your employer uses Workday, you must enter your time worked in Workday to get paid.
Work Study participants must:
- Maintain satisfactory academic standing
- Maintain full-time status in a degree program
- Obtain a Canadian Social Insurance Number (if you don’t already have one)
If you no longer meet the program’s eligibility requirements (for example, dropping to part-time status, withdrawing from the University, or finishing your degree program), your Work Study authorization will be rescinded.
Your Rights
As a McGill student casual employee participating in the Work Study program, you will become a member of a union. Read your union’s collective agreement to learn about your employment conditions, salary structure, and rates of pay:
- AMUSE Collective Agreement (for non-academic casuals)
- AMURE Collective Agreement (for research assistants)
Your Employer's Responsibilities
- Follow all Human Resources employment procedures
- Ensure you are suitably trained and supervised
- Ensure you are paid every two weeks
- Adhere to the employment conditions of the appropriate collective agreement
Summer Jobs
Students are strongly encouraged, as part of their financial plan, to work during the summer months to help save for the upcoming academic year. Participation in the Work Study Program can be extended to include the summer term, so long as you are not scheduled to graduate in the current academic year. Please send your extension request to work.study [at] mcgill.ca.
Summer savings tip: read our Money Management section to maximize your earnings and consider subletting your apartment if you leave Montreal in the summer. See Off-Campus Housing for more advice!
