On January 18, the Honourable Steven Guilbeault, federal Minister of Environment and Climate Change, visited the Faculty of Engineering to give a special lecture for the Chemical Engineering course, CHEE 401 – Energy Systems Engineering. The course, instructed by Adam McElligott, PhD, allows students to critically interpret and communicate topics about energy systems as they relate to scientific facts and local and global interconnectivity, as well as their broader societal and environmental impact.
Guilbeault shared insight into how Canada makes environmental policy decisions while navigating the complexities of global initiatives to fight climate change. He also delved into Canada’s ambitious climate plan, which includes making significant investments towards public transit, capping emissions from the oil and gas industry, and collaborating with other nations to protect 30 per cent of the planet’s lands and waters by 2030. The talk ended with him opening up the floor to the students to ask questions.
In a Tweet about the visit, Guilbeault thanked McElligott for the warm welcome and highlighted our Engineering students: “It’s always great to meet with students, they are the future & are always ready to challenge us to move faster and take stronger action. Thank you to the engineering students at McGill for the great discussion on climate change and the importance of getting involved!”
