Status: COMPLETED Summer 2012
The McGill Energy Project is a student-led cooperation of students, faculty and staff working together to find ways to use the McGill University Campus as a living laboratory for applied research with the objective of developing energy solutions for a sustainable future.
In order to render its work more effective, and to serve the general McGill community (including Vision 2020), the MEP hired two students to a conduct a situational analysis of McGill’s energy system on the downtown campus over the course of summer 2012. The analysis was broken into two components, one undertaken by each student. These parts present two perspectives of the energy systems on the downtown campus and are unified in the final report.
The first component will take a technical perspective and summarize information regarding how McGill sources, consumes and distributes energy on campus. This will entail collecting existing data from various authorities on campus, making it is accessible and understandable to members of the McGill community, and identifying areas where information is lacking (and include rational for collecting it). It will look at how the available information is being used to make decisions regarding energy use on campus, how it might be used more effectively and whether additional information may serve to better inform the decisions.
The second component will bring an organizational perspective to the analysis and attempt to identify all the important energy stakeholders on campus. These might include administrative departments, faculty research groups, campus organizations and student groups. It will seek to map out how these groups interact and understand what role they play in the decisions made regarding energy use on campus. It will then recommend ways that these groups might be able to collaborate so as to share resources and create an energy dialogue on campus.
