Appointment of Alanna Watt as Interim Dean of the Faculty of Science

Dear community members,
I am pleased to announce that Professor Alanna Watt, of the Department of Biology, has graciously agreed to take on the role of Interim Dean of Science, effective July 1, 2025. She will oversee the Faculty while we continue the search for a new Dean of Science. In accordance with the University Statutes, an Advisory Committee will be established to support this process.
Experience and expertise
Prof. Watt brings a wealth of experience, dedication and vision to this role. Since September 2024, she has served as Associate Dean (Research) in the Faculty of Science. Previously, she took on the role of Interim Chair of the Biology Department.
She has also demonstrated her commitment to institutional growth and community support as a mentor in the Provost’s Faculty Mentorship Network. She is known for consistently raising her hand to contribute to the institution, embodying the values of leadership and service that strengthen our community.
At the same time, Prof. Watt has pursued her cutting-edge research. After her time at the Häusser Lab at University College London, she began her career at McGill in 2011, where her lab, funded by NSERC and CIHR, focuses on cerebellar development and plasticity, investigating both healthy brains and animal models of disease. Recently promoted to full professor, she is an active member of her scientific community. In July, she will be chairing the prestigious Gordon Research Conference on the Cerebellum.
Ten years of leadership
I would also like to extend heartfelt gratitude to Professor Bruce Lennox, who has served as Dean of Science for the past ten years. Prof. Lennox has advocated for enhancement of the student experience while facilitating research collaboration, upgrading infrastructure and advancing research in sustainability. His dedication and contributions will have a lasting positive impact on our university community.
Sincerely,
Christopher P. Manfredi
Provost and Executive Vice-President (Academic)
