Request: Extension on an assignment, term essay, or other non-exam assessment

Faculty of Law Extension Policy

McGill Law's policy on extensions is provided for in Regulation 27 of the Faculty Regulations, found in the McGill Law Handbook of Academic Regulations, Resolutions and Policies, according to which extensions are only granted on the basis of a medical certificate or analogous circumstances. The Faculty Regulations are strictly enforced out of fairness to all students. Students should take cognizance of these in planning their academic workload and other commitments and make note of the dates and times of deadlines. If unsure of a deadline, please consult with the instructor. In the Faculty of Law, permission to delay submission of required work must be obtained from the Student Affairs Office. It cannot be granted by the instructor.

Students should refer to the Regulations on extensions for the submission of assignments before submitting their request.

Extension Request Minimum Lead Times & Response Delays

Responses to extensions are sent on a rolling basis, based on the order in which they were received. Students must submit their extension request directly to the Student Affairs Office, via this form, at least 2 business days prior to the assessment's submission deadline and can expect a delay of 2 business days before receiving a response to their request.

Early submission will increase the likelihood that you will receive a response before your original deadline. Please consider that the 2 business day delay is in addition to delays related to weekends and holidays. Please note that during busier periods, like the Midterm & Final Exam period, the delay for response will increase.

Important: While awaiting a response to your extension request, you are expected to continue working on your assessment. This ensures that, if your request is not granted, you will still be able to submit your work as close to the original deadline as possible. If a request was submitted in advance but ultimately not approved, late submissions will not be penalized solely due to the pending decision. This said, students will need to submit as soon as possible following receipt of the non-approval.

Actual Due Dates must be at least 2 days from the date on which you are completing the form and Requested Due Dates cannot be more than 30 days in the future (e.g., if today is March 1st, you cannot request a due date beyond March 30th).
