The Challenges in Access to Healthcare for Intersex Individuals

9 January 2020, 17h-18h30, Old Chancellor Day Hall, Stephen Scott Room

Yann Joly speaking on January 9, 2020, in the Stephen Scott Seminar Room

On January 9, 2020, many members of the McGill community attended the RGHL’s first seminar of the new year.

Yann Joly (DCL'09), Research Director of the Centre of Genomics and Policy (CGP), discussed the challenges faced by intersex individuals in interacting with the healthcare system. His presentation focused on the research currently being done at the CGP. In discussing some preliminary findings, the speaker acknowledged the pressure faced by parents to consent to surgeries, the need to prohibit or delay unnecessary “normalising” treatment of intersex persons, and the need to develop training material on the ethical and social aspects of disclosing intersex conditions. He concluded with a discussion of the need to develop better guidance for health care practitioners in this field.

30 septembre 2019, 16h-18h, Stephen Scott Seminar Room (OCDH 16)

Agnieszka Doll giving her presentation.

On November 18, 2019 many members of the McGill community attended our second seminar of the year.

Dr. Agnieszka Doll’s presentation was centered around involuntary admission into psychiatric facilities, and how legal and psychiatric opinions on patients are created. In particular, she focused on the role of paramedics in the admission process, as first responders generating facts about the mental state of the patient.

Dr. Doll discussed the social relations that impact their work, such as the interplay between their role and the role of psychiatrists, as well as the effect of institutional priorities. (See her abstract.)
