McGill Desautels finance students expand horizons with small-cap fund

Published: 19 June 2025

Thanks to a generous donation from Montreal finance leader J. Sebastian Van Berkom, students in the Honours in Investment Management (HIM) program at McGill’s Desautels Faculty of Management will now manage a newly launched small-cap fund through Desautels Capital Management (DCM)—Canada’s first university-owned registered investment firm.

The addition of the small-cap fund marks a significant expansion of DCM’s portfolio, and complements the firm’s existing large-cap and fixed-income funds, expanding students’ exposure to diverse investment strategies, including AI-driven and socially responsible investing.

Van Berkom, founder of Van Berkom Global Asset Management, launched a similar program at Concordia. Inspired by McGill alumnus Jonathan Ross Goodman (MBA’94), he’s now helping prepare McGill students for careers in finance, consulting and entrepreneurship.
