Test Preparation Courses

Prepare for the TEFaQ or TEF Canada exam with 6-week courses at the McGill School of Continuing Studies. Learn essential strategies and participate in simulations to help you perform your best and feel confident on test day.

HOW TO REGISTER

Focus on one or two specific test sections, or register for all three to complete a comprehensive 43-hour prep course:
 

Oral expression

Grow confidence in your speaking skills by mastering vocabulary for real-life situations, both formal and informal.

  • 6 weeks (18 hours)
  • 2 hours/week of group instruction
  • 1 hour/week in small groups with trained conversation partners

Oral comprehension

Improve your listening skills for daily life, from news segments to friendly interactions to professional settings.

  • 6 weeks (18 hours)
  • 2 hours/week of group instruction
  • 1 hour/week in small groups with trained conversation partners

Written expression

Strengthen your French writing skills, vocabulary, and ability to express opinions in a structured manner.

  • 6 weeks (7 hours)
  • 1 hour/week of group instruction
  • 1 hour of one-on-one detailed feedback and coaching

  • Test structure and evaluation criteria 
  • Practice and test simulation sessions
  • Time management techniques
  • Strategies and vocabulary specific to the test format

Prerequisites

  1. A minimum of a strong A2 or B1 level of French. If you do not know your level, refer to the CEFR level descriptors table or ask to meet with a member of our academic staff to evaluate your level.
  2. A computer or tablet with web camera and internet connection. All classes are held online.

All three TEF/TEFaQ prep courses are delivered online over the same 6-week periods:

Winter 2026 January 6 - February 16
Spring 2026 March 10 - April 19
April 6 course rescheduled to April 10
Summer 2026 May 5 - June 15
Fall 2026 September 15 - October 26
October 12 course rescheduled to October 16

Schedule and fees

Schedules are staggered throughout the week so that you can take more than one prep course at a time without a conflict:

How to register

  1. Create or log into your Athena account

  2. Choose your course(s)

    - Oral expression course
    - Oral comprehension course
    - Written expression workshop

  3. Add to cart

    - Select the plus (+) icon in the grey box for the session you wish to register for
    - Select ‘Add to Cart’
    - Repeat for all desired courses

  4. Review your cart

    - Select the grey shopping cart icon in the upper right corner
    - Double check your choices
    - Select ‘Checkout’

  5. Complete your payment

    All fees are non-refundable after the start of the course.
