Shareholders of Air Transat rejected Quebec media magnate Pierre-Karl Péladeau’s attempt to gain control of the travel company’s board. The billionaire businessman has had his eye on the company for some time.

"Owning an airline seems to be very cool stuff. It seems to appeal to egos to some degree," says Karl Moore, Associate Professor at McGill Desautels. Air Transat is carrying a heaving debt load and lost millions in the latest quarter, but there is still a business case to be made for leisure airlines.

At the 2026 Winter Olympics in Italy, Canada finished eighth in the total medal count. It was the country’s lowest Winter Olympic medal tally since the 2002 Olympics in Salt Lake City. The result is a failure of leadership; Prof. Karl Moore writes in Forbes.com. For many would-be Olympians, the costs are simply out of reach. Elite athletic programs don’t get sufficient funding, and according to the Canadian Olympic Committee, athletes are paying an average of $25,000 each year out of pocket just to compete.

More than 99% of Air Transat pilots voted to authorize a strike by their union, if necessary. Pilots at the charter airline are seeking more job security, better working conditions, more compensation, and better quality of life.

The strength of the union’s mandate didn’t come as a surprise to Prof. Karl Moore. “The threat of a strike over the holiday season—when airlines are at their busiest—is a good negotiating tactic,” Moore told cbc.ca.

High levels of inflation have caused a cost-of-living crisis in Canada, and bartering is one way to help keep costs down. Trading goods and services with others also offers a more personal touch.
