Focus online: "There’s a place for us"

The October 2013 edition of Focus online takes a look at the Faculty of Law’s 5th annual DCL retreat that took place this September, to discuss ‘Finding Our Place in Academic Life.’ The event, which was coorganized by doctoral candidates Jodi Lazare and Geoffrey Conrad, drew over 30 students for a full day of rewarding and insightful discussion. McGill MBA student team wins 2013 Hult Prize Competition

A team of five McGill students won the 2013 Hult Prize, valued at $1 million for their social enterprise project to secure food for undernourished communities in urban slums. Yaw Nyampong named Executive Director of Centre for Research in Air & Space Law

The Faculty of Law is pleased to announce that Dr. Yaw Nyampong has been named Executive Director of the Centre for Research in Air & Space Law. Yaw Nyampong (LLM’05, DCL’11) is also a graduate of the Faculty of Law of the University of Ghana, Legon. He held an Arsenault Postdoctoral Fellowship at McGill's Institute of Air & Space Law in 2011-2012, and a Boulton Fellowship at the Faculty of Law in 2012-2013.

The Worlds of the Trust: newest publication from the Paul-André Crépeau Centre

We are happy to announce that the latest publication from the Crépeau Centre is The Worlds of the Trust (Cambridge University Press, 2013), which was edited by Professor Lionel Smith. This collection of 22 essays makes a significant contribution to the comparative study of trusts. It includes contributions from Canada, the U.S., England, France, Scotland, South Africa, Israel and China.

Vanessa Arviset takes over as Crépeau Centre’s new assistant director

The Paul-André Crépeau Centre for Private and Comparative Law is happy to welcome Vanessa Arviset as its new Assistant Director. She takes over from Me Régine Tremblay. Me Vanessa Arviset, BCL/LLB’06, received the Osgoode Society Legal History Prize (2005) during her studies at the Faculty. Previously, she obtained a BA and MA in philosophy from the Université de Montréal. A member of the Barreau du Québec, Me Arviset practiced in Montreal in the fields of maritime law and commercial litigation.

Fred Headon (BCL’96, LLB’96) takes the helm at CBA

On August 20, 2013, Fred Headon (BCL’96, LLB’96) took over the helm as President of the Canadian Bar Association (CBA) during the closing luncheon of the CBA's annual Legal Conference in Saskatoon. Headon currently leads Air Canada’s in-house labour and employment law team at the company’s headquarters in Montreal. From 1999 to 2006, he practised labour and employment law, human rights and privacy law, and administrative and constitutional law at McCarthy Tétrault in Montreal.

Hat Trick For Daniel Boyer

The Faculty of Law was delighted to learn that our colleague Daniel Boyer (BA’79, MLIS’88), Head Librarian of the Nahum Gelber Law Library, was named Associate Dean of User Services of the McGill Library for a two-year mandate. As well, Me Boyer has also been named to the board of directors of the Société québécoise d'information juridique (SOQUIJ) for a period of five years, following the recommendation of the Deans of law faculties across Quebec.

Daniel Weinstock to direct McGill’s Institute for Health and Social Policy

On June 27, 2013, the Quebec Bar announced the recipients of the Advocatus Emeritus title for 2013. The Faculty of Law wishes to congratulate alumni Robert-Jean Chénier (BCL’74); Eric M. Maldoff (BCL’74, LLB’75), a member of the McGill Board of Governors; the Hon. Joseph R. Nuss (BCL’58); Marilyn Ann Piccini-Roy (BCL’83, LLB’82), a Faculty lecturer; and James A. Woods (BCL’73, LLB’74) a Faculty lecturer and former president of the Faculty Advisory Board.

BLG makes generous donation to Paul-André Crépeau Centre for Private & Comparative Law

John G. Murphy, managing partner at Borden Ladner Gervais (BLG), is extremely proud of the efforts made by a team headed by H. John Godber (BCL'88, LLB'88) and Neil Hazan (BCL/LLB'02) to support McGill Faculty of Law’s Paul-André Crépeau Centre for Private and Comparative Law. The fundraising activity, which brought in $400,000 from BLG’s lawyers and partners across Canada, ended this month.

Ronald Niezen inaugural incumbent of the Pearson Chair in Civil Society and Public Policy

The Faculties of Arts and Law are happy to announce that Professor Ronald Niezen, a former Chair of McGill’s Department of Anthropology who held the Canada Research Chair in the Comparative Study of Indigenous Rights and Identity, has been appointed as the first incumbent of the Katharine A. Pearson Chair in Civil Society and Public Policy.

Margaret Somerville awarded a Doctor of Laws, honoris causa, by Royal Military College of Canada

McGill Professor Margaret Somerville was awarded a Doctorate of Laws, honoris causa, on May 16, 2013, by the Royal Military College in Kingston, Ontario. During the College’s 94th Convocation ceremony, the College’s Chancellor, the Honourable Peter McKay, Minister of Defence, cited “her exceptional contributions to society through research, scholarly debate and personal involvement.”
