Liza Tom is a PhD candidate in Communication Studies, with a Graduate Option in Gender and Women’s Studies. She is an FRQSC (Fonds de recherche du Quebec) Doctoral Research Award holder. Her research focuses on the ways in which gender-variant communities in Bangalore, India are interpellated within discursive identity rubrics like “transgender”, and how they access rights-based and popular narratives of inclusion through and against these frameworks. In particular, her work looks at the role that non-governmental organizations play in shaping policy and civil society narratives on transfeminine communities in the city. She has an Integrated Master’s from the Indian Institute of Technology - Madras (IIT-M).
