Mitacs Globalink

Mitacs builds partnerships between academia, industry, and the world – to create a more innovative Canada. Take your graduate or postdoctoral research abroad with Mitacs Globalink. Globalink offers travel funding between Canada and several international partners.

Value & Duration

  • The award value is $6,000
  • Travel duration must be of 12-24 weeks 

Deadlines

First Call

  • April 27th, 2023 to submit a fully signed “Intention to Apply” form 
  • Mitacs will start accepting completed applications in May. Note that you must submit a completed application to Mitacs at least 16 weeks before your intended travel date.

Second Call

  • TBC. During early Fall 2023 for Winter 2024 travel

Third Call

  • TBC. During early Winter 2024 for Summer 2024 travel

For successful applicants, traveling during a pandemic poses additional risks and challenges that must be taken into account when contemplating and planning travel. McGill is not cancelling University-sponsored travel at this time. However, students planning on travelling abroad over the coming months may wish to reconsider, and are urged to fully evaluate the potential safety, financial and academic risks involved. Please consult the Travel Services website for more information.

Countries & Partners

The program supports travel and research between Canadian universities and universities and institutions in certain countries.

Eligibility

Applicants must be:

  1. For Master’s, PhD, Postdocs and Senior Undergraduates
  2. For travel to one of the eligible countries (priority is given to students collaborating with a Mitacs partner institution)
  3. Travel duration must be of 12-24 weeks 
  4. For collaboration with an institution not partnered with Mitacs, the McGill supervisor must commit to a contribution of 2,000 CAD

Supervisor and Contribution Requirements

  • The supervisor must be a recognized faculty member at their institutions
  • The supervisor must be eligible to host graduate students
  • The McGill supervisor must commit to a contribution of 2,000 CAD for collaboration with an institution not partnered with Mitacs
    1. The contribution cannot come from the host supervisor (the supervisor external to McGill), the student, or out-of-pocket
    2. The contribution cannot come from Tri-Agency Funds or FRQ; department contributions or start-up funds are acceptable
    3. The deadline to transfer the funds are as follows:
      • Deadline to transfer funds: First Call - May 12th, 2023 .

How to Apply

  1. Download and complete the Intention to Apply Form.
  2. Submit the completed and signed form to GPS for preapproval by the deadline, to this email address:fundingapplications.gps [at] mcgill.ca. The form must have the Faculty Associate Dean's signature.
  3. Preapproved candidates receive Mitacs application package, complete and submit their applications to GPS by the deadline.

After Pre-approval 

Preapproval will not be granted until the supervisor's contribution is received (if applicable). Pre-approved candidates receive Mitacs application package and instructions to complete and submit their application by the deadline. Please note that you must be approved by Mitacs to receive the award. GPS pre-approval is not the final approval.

Please note the following regarding the OSR checklist in the application package: 

  • The supervisor is responsible for completing and obtaining signatures on the OSR checklist
  • The application will be reviewed only after signatures from the Dean and ADR are provided on the OSR checklist
