The Weston Fellowship

The Weston Fellowship was established by Arthur and Dawn Weston to recognize and promote the development of university teaching and learning expertise in various disciplines. It is awarded by the Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies (GPS) upon the recommendation of Teaching and Learning Services (TLS) to an outstanding full-time graduate student interested in conducting research on post-secondary teaching and learning in any Faculty.

Value & Duration

  • Award value varies:$19,000 for 2023-24
  • Renewable once at the Master's level, twice at the Doctoral level. Renewal is subject to maintaining good standing in the program and providing a satisfactory progress report.

Competition Dates

  • 2023/24 competition is now closed. Applications will reopen in Academic Year 2025/26. 

Eligibility

In order to be eligible for the Weston Fellowship, candidates must:

  • be registered in a graduate degree program at McGill or have applied and received an Offer of Admission from McGill;
  • be registered full-time for the duration of the award;
  • Master's students must be M1 or M2 (as appears on their Minerva transcripts);
  • Doctoral students must be PhD1 to *PhD5 (as appears on their Minerva transcripts); 
  • be conducting (or be planning) research on university teaching and learning in any Faculty.

Preference will be given to doctoral students.

*Students from Clinical Psychology are eligible from PhD1 to PhD6

Application Procedures and Requirements

Applicants are required to submit their completed package to fundingapplications.gps [at] mcgill.ca with the subject line “Weston Fellowship” by March 22, 2023. Please ensure that each item listed below is included in your application package.

  1. Completed and signed application form;
  2. Curriculum vitae;
  3. Certified copies of all official transcripts from university level studies (graduate and undergraduate);
  4. Explanation of special circumstances (if applicable) that includes any special considerations that may have had an effect on your performance or productivity (e.g. barriers in your academic experience, delays in research results, gaps in your experience);
  5. Two Referee’s Reports on the prescribed form and sent separately by each Referee to fundingapplications.gps [at] mcgill.ca by March 22, 2023.

Candidates must be available on April 24 to 28, 2023 for the interview process.

Review Process

The selection committee will perform a review of applications and invite the top applicants to an interview towards the end of April. Please note that this interview is mandatory for those who wish to be considered in the final round. Interviews by videoconference may be possible in exceptional circumstances.

Announcement of Results

Candidates and departments will be informed by the Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies Office of results of the competition in the month of May.
