As part of this year’s Spring Convocation celebrations, McGill University will confer honorary degrees upon ten inspirational individuals, five of whom are from Quebec.

McGill University’s Faculty of Dental Medicine and Oral Health Sciences and the Welcome Hall Mission celebrated the completion of the Jim Lund Dental Clinic expansion project, which started in October 2023.

Established in 2011 in partnership with the Faculty of Dental Medicine and Oral Health Sciences, the Jim Lund Dental Clinic at Welcome Hall Mission has long been recognized for its commitment to helping Montrealers in need with free dental care.

Ten students have been named McGill University’s recipients of the prestigious Schulich Leader Scholarship, Canada’s largest Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) scholarship.

McGill graduate Seymour Schulich, BSc’61, MBA’65, DLitt’04, an entrepreneur and one of Canada’s leading philanthropists, created the scholarship fund in 2012 to encourage outstanding entrepreneurial-minded students on their paths to becoming technology innovators.

For years, pollinator declines have been a pressing issue for ecosystem health and food security in the face of climate change and human impacts on the environment. Even in their sleep, pollinating insects cannot catch a break – for fear they’ll be taken down by a small, but mighty predator: the candy-striped spider. Research published in Ecology took a closer look into this spider’s behaviour and found that the result of their stealth attacks could have substantial impacts on ecosystems.

A landmark donation to support McGill University’s renowned genomics research and education programs from UK-based alumnus and long-time donor Victor Dahdaleh is a catalyst for advancements in genomics research. Thanks to gifts from Victor Dahdaleh totalling more than $30 million, McGill will launch the Victor Phillip Dahdaleh Institute of Genomic Medicine.

Today, The Royal Society of Canada (RSC) announced 102 new Fellows and 54 new Members of the College of New Scholars, Artists, and Scientists. Among the 2022 cohort are fifteen McGill researchers and scholars, including eleven RSC Fellows and four new Members, who will be inducted at the RSC Celebration of Excellence and Engagement on November 25, 2022, in Calgary, Alberta. The newest McGill cohort will join 238 McGill researchers who are currently RSC Fellows and Members of the College and 2400 Canada-wide.

As part of its ongoing commitment to fighting climate change, McGill University’s result-oriented strategy has accelerated the effective decarbonization of its investment, and further reduced its exposure to large users of oil, gas, and coal, as well as fossil fuel producers. By taking a holistic approach that looks beyond the traditional carbon-intensive energy sector, the University has achieved a nearly 53 per cent absolute reduction in the carbon footprint of its two-billion-dollar endowment portfolio in just two years.

McGill University welcomes the Quebec government's renewed commitment to its New Vic project as part of the 2022-2023 budget documents.

This innovative project aims to convert part of the former Royal Victoria Hospital site into a learning, research and teaching hub focused on sustainable development and public policy. To do this, McGill will transform a portion of the site into a state-of-the-art space designed to support multidisciplinary teaching and research activities, while fostering collaborative research activities with government, private sector and academic partners.

Canada’s most prestigious French-language learned society announced the recipients of its research awards today, and two McGill professors are among the winners.

At its 77th virtual gala ceremony, the non-profit organization Acfas, l’Association francophone pour le savoir, awarded McGill Professor Michel Biron the Prix André-Laurendeau and Professor Susanne Lajoie the Prix Jeanne-Lapointe.

Six students from across Canada have been named recipients of the country’s largest undergraduate scholarship program, Schulich Leader Scholarships, and will begin their studies this September, in McGill’s bicentennial year.

Out of a pool of 350,000 potential candidates across Canada, 1,400 students were nominated. Given the unprecedented circumstances associated with the pandemic, for the second consecutive year, the Schulich Foundation awarded an additional 50 scholarships for a total of 100 in recognition of the challenges facing students and their families.

As the world slowly emerges from a pandemic that exposed the vulnerability of healthcare systems when overwhelmed with multifaceted management challenges, McGill University has launched a new Graduate Certificate in Healthcare Management (GCHM). A collaborative initiative between McGill’s Desautels Faculty of Management and Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences, the GCHM program is designed to train physicians and other healthcare professionals in the skills needed to make effective decisions and succeed in leadership roles.

Today Genome Quebec announced the results of its Genomic Integration Program, Human Health Stream competition. Five McGill teams from a diverse array of fields were awarded funds, totaling nearly $1 million. One of the defining features of this program is the requirement that institutional applicants must also have an external non-academic partner, thus supporting program goals of stimulating the Quebec economy and encouraging the use of genomic technologies in the Quebec healthcare system.
