The Computational and Data Systems Institute (CDSI) is delighted to welcome Joseph Vybihal (School of Computer Science) to the role of Associate Director, Generative AI and Coding, effective September 1, 2026.
In this role, Vybihal will lead efforts to integrate artificial intelligence into CDSI's coding-related initiatives, establish an AI in Coding Solutions Hub, and develop activities that promote best practices for the use of AI in coding across all Faculties. His work will support the responsible and innovative adoption of AI technologies while strengthening opportunities for learning, research, and collaboration across the university community.
A senior faculty lecturer in the McGill School of Computer Science, Joseph Vybihal’s research interests are in intelligent systems, an area that bridges software engineering and AI, as well as the societal impact of social media. He is actively engaged in leadership roles both within and beyond the university. He currently serves as Co-Director of the School of Computer Science Summer Camp, as Secretary of the Board of the Canadian Scientific and Christian Affiliation (CSCA), and is a member of the Association for the Advancement of Artificial Intelligence (AAAI).
“Generative AI is already reshaping how we code—the question is whether we adopt it thoughtfully or just quickly,” Vybihal says. “I'm looking forward to building a space where the McGill community can learn to use these tools in ways that genuinely serve good work and good judgment, not just speed.”
