What can I study in the Faculty of Science?

Below is a detailed list of all our programs of study.

But first:

What can I major in? What groups can I choose from? What are B.Sc. program groups?

B.Sc. students are admitted to a group, such as the Physical, Earth, Math & Computer Science group. You can choose any program from within that group. ("Program" means Major, Liberal Core Science Component, and Honours programs.) For more details about program groups, and applying to Science, please consult the Undergraduate Handbook.

What is the difference between Major, Honours, and Liberal programs?

You can choose breadth or depth. For more details, consult our program types webpage.

What can I minor in?

B.Sc. students may choose any Minor in any group.

Is a minor program optional or required?

B.Sc. Majors and Honours students do not need to complete a second program (such as a minor); it is optional.

B.Sc. Liberal students must combine a core science component (CSC) in one discipline with a second program.  This second program is one of: (1) a minor from a variety of disciplines, or (2) a minor or major concentration from the Faculty of Arts, or (3) a second CSC. Note that a science minor or second CSC can be in any group.

What do the abbreviations in the following table mean?

Short name Full name
Lib. Liberal (Core Science Component)
Maj. Major
Jt. Maj. Joint Majors
Hon. Honours
Jt. Hon. Joint Honours
Min. Minor
Maj. Conc. Major Concentration

Where can I find more details about these programs?

Please see the McGill eCalendar, more specifically:
Programs, Courses and University regulations > Faculties & Schools > Faculty of Science > Undergraduate > Academic programs.
OR: Follow the links in the table below. These generally take you to the calendar pages of the departments or schools offering the programs, where you can find all the programs for each department.
