Welcome to the first Connect2Learn session of the 2021-22 Training Year! The Connect2Learn series is designed to facilitate interdisciplinary exchange and learning among all CAnD3 members, partners, and Fellows.

In our first session, we will examine ethical dilemmas raised by the use of data in formulating, implementing, and evaluating decisions and policies. It particularly focuses on balancing the risks and benefits of using data for policy and addressing the unintended consequences of data-driven policymaking.

Nicholas King is an Associate Professor in the Department of the Social Studies of Medicine and an Associate Member in the Department of Epidemiology and Biostatistics at McGill University. He also directs the Policy and Data Science Program (Links to an external site.) at McGill's Max Bell School of Public Policy.

Dr. King's research spans two main areas: public health ethics and health information, inequalities, and measurement. His previous and current research includes work on the ethics of biosecurity, disaster response, and public health preparedness; ethical issues in responses to emerging diseases and the development of antimicrobial-resistant pathogens; the role of ethical judgments in the statistical measurement and assessment of causality in research on health inequalities; and the role of mathematical modeling and information aggregation in the development of infectious disease policies.
