Under the leadership of Co-Directors Stephen McAdams and Robert Hasegawa, TONE started out with 24 co-applicants (CA) and 61 collaborators (CO) from 12 countries. Representing a wide span of disciplines, this large and broad membership brought substantive knowledge, research and creative skills, methodologies, well-established connections with the different musical communities, and a willingness to engage in interdisciplinary collaboration. Project Co-Directors
Serving as a central leadership hub, Professors Stephen McAdams and Robert Hasegawa are TONE's Project Co-Directors (PCD). They coordinate the strategic vision and intellectual leadership of the project with the Partners and provide financial and administrative oversight and day-to-day management with TONE Central, the core operations team.
Stephen McAdams (Axis 2 leader) is one of the major actors in the field of timbre research and the first to bring psychology to bear on the complex issue of orchestration creation and reception. Robert Hasegawa (Axis 1 leader) is a pioneer in the music-theoretic analysis of timbre in contemporary music, establishing the analytical frame for the timbre and orchestration research of TONE.

Student involvement in TONE is encouraged through extensive integration in training, research, tool development, performance, and composition.
