About

The Annual Workshops of the Timbre & Orchestration Network (TONE) Project provide an important opportunity for members of the partnership to convene each summer. Hosted in rotation by academic institutions in North America and Europe—or delivered online—these meetings play a central role in advancing the project’s work. They provide a collaborative forum for:

  • refining concepts, methods, and tool development
  • sharing research findings
  • fostering new topic‑focused collaborations across partner institutions
  • developing training plans for students, postdoctoral fellows, and emerging scholars
  • shaping knowledge mobilization strategies
  • reviewing the implementation of TONE’s Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (EDI) plan across committees, recruitment, training initiatives, and research activities

Sub-Axis sessions review current studies and strategize for the future, formulating actionable goals and proposals. These workshops also feature lightning talks, student presentations, concerts, and the director's report.

with a hybrid format enabling both in-person and online attendance to enhance global participation.

Recognizing the importance of in-person contact for the building of collaborations, but desiring to limit carbon emissions and travel spending, TONE will only hold 3 hybrid workshops:

  • Y1 Kickoff Meeting (2026) – McGill University, Montreal, Canada
  • Y4 TONE Workshop (2029) – CNSMDL, Lyon, France
  • Y8 TONE Workshop (2033) - University of Victoria, Victoria, Canada

The other workshops will be online only.
