Eligibility & Information

  • Student members of TONE are eligible to apply for funding for an opportunity to present a TONE-related project at the yearly Summer Workshop.
  • Each year, the Training and Mentoring committee may select up to 5 students for this funding.  In years with an in-person workshop (i.e., 2029 and 2033), TONE will fund travel, lodging, and meals for selected student presenters. In years with a virtual workshop (i.e., 2027-2028, 2030-2032), selected students will present on Zoom.
  • Successful student applicants attending an in-person workshop might have to fund their trips upfront and be reimbursed via expense report following the event.
  • Preference will be given to doctoral students.
  • Applicants must participate in the Timbre Geek Network (TGN) Event in order to be considered eligible for this funding. Registration for the event is required. If the applicant is not able to attend the event, a pre-recorded presentation of approximately 2 minutes may be submitted to the Project Manager, Andre Oliveira at actor-project.music [at] mcgill.ca (actor-project[dot]music[at]mcgill[dot]ca). Information about the TGN event will be sent via email to all students.
  • Past recipients of this funding are not eligible to apply for it again as TONE would like to support as many student members as possible.
  • The yearly workshops take place during the summer, usually in July.

Evaluation Criteria

Applications are adjudicated across the following equally weighted criteria:

  • The scientific/artistic merit of project
  • The project’s potential to stimulate interest and engage TONE members in institutions other than the applicant’s own
  • The interdisciplinary potential of the project – The TONE community involves researchers from various disciplines, thus it is important that selected papers speak to this broad audience. While not every project needs to be interdisciplinary, all need to be accessible to the broad range of disciplines represented in TONE.
  • The project’s relevance to TONE's mandate.

Deliverables

  • Student presenters will be asked to help with various small tasks at the workshop, such as note-taking during meetings.
  • Recipients of this may be asked to provide a brief summary report, interview, or blog post about their experience at the workshop.

  • February 1st at 5:00pm EST

If a deadline falls on a weekend, applications will be accepted through the following Monday at 4pm EST

Application Process

  1. Complete and submit the online application form by the stated deadline. Late or incomplete submissions will not be considered.

  2. All applications are adjudicated by the Training and Mentoring Committee in accordance with the selection criteria outlined above.  Committee members will recuse themselves from deliberations regarding any research project they oversee or that may pose a conflict of interest for them. Any recusals associated with the award winner will be made public when the award is announced.
  3. Applicants will be notified of the results approximately 5-6 weeks after the application deadline.
  4. Successful applicants will be contacted by the Project Manager to discuss next steps and funding disbursement arrangements.
