TONE Membership Categories

TONE membership is organized in two categories: Collaborators (or Regular Members) and Student Members. To apply for membership, interested individuals must follow specific procedures as outlined below for each category. TONE does not charge a membership fee from members. 

Collaborator (or Regular Member)

This category includes faculty members, postdoctoral* researchers, private sector parties, and artists from partner and non-partner institutions who envision collaborations with other TONE members in the development of their own projects or through the engagement in existing projects. Projects may originate from a TONE funding or from members' individual research provided that they follow TONE's mandate. Collaborators' obligations include 1) attending the meetings of the Research Axis, or Sub-axis, to which their project pertains, 2) providing the Project Manager with their project updates when requested, and 3) attending the annual summer workshop to stay abreast of TONE's activities and inform other members of their progress. Additionally, Collaborators from partner institutions are required to assist their respective TONE Institution Representative (IR) in the submission of the annual activity report and contribution statement required by SSHRC. They must do so by providing the IR with their TONE-related information, normally requested around February by the Project Manager. Note that:

  • Collaborators from partner and non-partner institutions may sponsor student membership applications (see sponsorship process below) as long as they are faculty members.
  • Collaborators from non-partner institutions may not be eligible for certain funding opportunities due to restrictions imposed by SSHRC**.

Student Member

This category includes undergraduate, graduate, and postdoctoral* students working under the supervision of, or sponsored by, a TONE collaborator who envision collaborations with other TONE members in the development of their own projects or through the engagement in existing projects. Students are encouraged to contact Axis leaders [link] to learn about ongoing projects and to find the best way to get involved. Student members from non-partner institutions may also be referred to as independent student members.

Student members' obligations include 1) attending the meetings of the Research Axis, or Sub-axis, to which their project pertains, 2) providing the Project Manager with their project updates when requested, and 3) attending the annual summer workshop to stay abreast of TONE's activities and inform other members of their progress.

Note that Student members may be supervised or sponsored by TONE members from an institution different from their own.

N.B. * Postdoctoral researchers may apply as collaborators or as student members, depending on their foreseen involvement in the project.

** According to SSHRC policies, TONE can only transfer funds to TONE co-applicants (i.e., individuals involved in the original grant proposal), who are located at partner institutions.

How to apply for membership

Collaborator Membership

To apply as a Collaborator, please submit the following materials via email to the Project Co-Directors (stephen.mcadams [at] mcgill.ca (Stephen McAdams) and robert.hasegawa [at] mcgill.ca (Robert Hasegawa)) and the actor-project.music [at] mcgill.ca (Project Manager) (André Martins de Oliveira):

  1. A letter of intent including:
    • Why you want to join TONE
    • With whom you would be interested in collaborating actively within the TONE membership
    • Particular projects with which you could see yourself being involved
    • What your own work could bring to the research around timbre and orchestration.
  2. Full curriculum vitae
  • Applications will be considered in a three-stage process, going through the approval of the Project Co-Directors, the Executive Committee, and SSHRC.
  • Only after the official approval by SSHRC is the candidate accepted as a collaborator of the project.
  • Applications are accepted continuously; there is no deadline to apply. The processing time is between two and four weeks.

Student Membership

To apply for student membership:

  1. Please ask the TONE collaborator sponsoring you to submit the Student Sponsorship Form available online.
    • Please note that regular members from non-partner institutions who are faculty members may also sponsor student membership applications.
  2. Once step 1 is complete, students will receive an email request to submit an application form including a short written explanation as to why they want to be part of TONE and how their research interests fit with the mandate of TONE in terms of timbre and/or orchestration. This will be reviewed by the Project Manager and the Project Co-Directors.
  • Applications are accepted continuously; there is no deadline to apply. Processing time is between one and two weeks.
  • When students graduate, they may apply to become collaborators (see Collaborator membership above). If, however, they decide to pursue another degree (undergraduate, graduate, or postdoctoral), they may remain as student members, even if there is a short gap between both programs.

Student Sponsorship Form

TONE offers funding opportunities for both collaborator and student members to support their projects and initiatives.

Collaborators

  • Research-Creation Project Funding
  • Strategic Project Funding

These funding aim to encourage innovative research-creation and/or pilot projects by TONE members that could lead to external funding opportunities, joint publications, musical compositions/premieres/recordings, new modules for the TOR, and/or other public presentations of TONE research. Note that in both cases the PI must be from a partner institution.

Students

  • Student Exchange: Student members and postdoctoral collaborators of TONE are eligible to apply for funding for an exchange program between TONE partner institutions to conduct research within the ACTOR project’s mandate.
  • Student Presentations: Student members of ACTOR are eligible to apply for funding for an opportunity to present a TONE-related project at the yearly TONE Workshop.
  • Collaborative Student Project Grant: aims to support research in line with TONE's mission by providing students with funding for the summer period and encouraging interinstitutional collaboration among students in the TONE partnership.

The TONE Data Repository is housed on a dedicated Microsoft Sharepoint account. Managed by TONE staff, it is a place for storage and sharing meant to host materials from TONE projects, axes, and committees. The platform is accessible to all TONE members (access is granted once the membership application is processed). As default, members have view permission only. Edit permission can be temporarily assigned on a case-by-case basis upon request. The TONE Data Repository is part of TONE's Data Management Plan and can be used during the planning and execution of projects, before the data is uploaded to the Canadian Dataverse Repository Borealis for long-term storage, publication, and sharing. For more information, see [TONE's DMP] 

TONE Data Repository

TONE releases a newsletter containing important project updates to all members and external subscribers on a monthly basis from August–December and February–June. Members (collaborators or students) are welcome to submit information about their TONE-related research, including upcoming events, for publicization in the newsletter through the online Newsletter Request Form. Examples of news that can be shared include information about projects, experiments, publications, presentations, upcoming events, awards, and honours. Along with text, it is possible to submit pictures, as well as pdf and media files (audio, video). Please note that the editorial team might make small modifications to adapt your content to the newsletter format. Members are automatically subscribed to the TONE Newsletter. TONE curates a number of publication platforms, including peer-reviewed articles and essays on the TOR (Timbre & Orchestration Resource) to which Collaborators and Students members are encouraged to contribute. This is a great opportunity for members to publish their research and showcase their work. To contribute, follow the steps below:

  1. Identify the type of publication that best suits your goals – Contribute to TOR
  2. Check what kind of materials must be submitted, including text length, formats, etc. – TOR Submission Guidelines

Slack is the online communication platform used by TONE to facilitate the day-to-day conversation among members. Especially useful to centralize discussions and facilitate the quick sharing of documents, the platform features channels that allow researchers to organize their conversation according to a specific project, research axis, committee, etc. It can be accessed via desktop application, apps on iOS and Android, or via web browser. The TONE Internal Directory is a database created to boost connection and networking potential within the TONE community. Accessible to TONE members only, it contains key information about the research, projects and expertise of members and it has been useful for those seeking collaborations and for student members seeking exchange opportunities.
