TONE Committees

TONE's goals and initiatives are governed by four committees, each serving a distinct role in supporting and guiding the project.

Executive Committee (EC)

The EC 1) makes key policy decisions concerning the intellectual direction of the project, 2) provides advice on major decisions, 3) helps ensure integration of research objectives, including coordination of the Partner institutions and research axes, 4) adjudicates strategic project funding, and 5) ensures adherence to the EDI plan to promote a diverse team, inclusive working environment, and equitable opportunities within the Partnership. During semi-annual virtual meetings, it participates in budget planning, fund allocation, and planning of project activities. It is alternately chaired by the Project Co-Directors and comprise: 3 Institutional Representatives (rotating biennially among Partners), the TMC, KMC, and EDIC coordinators, one post-doc, an elected student representative, and the Project Manager as secretary.

Training and Mentoring Committee (TMC)

TMC is coordinated by one Co-Applicant (elected biennially by members), one post-doc, and one graduate student (elected yearly by student members). It also includes two regular members (elected biennially). The TMC coordinates TONE’s training opportunities for students on research methods, collaboration ethics, and research dissemination. In collaborationwith the EDIC, the TMC facilitates EDI training opportunities for all TONE members. The committee works with EDI/HR officers at McGill, and with Partners, on developing a sustainable strategy for recruiting into TONE students and PDFs from underrepresented groups, ensuring they feel welcomed, included, and represented among TONE’s membership. It coordinates student workshops and connects them with Partners and other institutions for potential internships or job opportunities. The TMC coordinators report to the PCDs, and the coordinating Co-Applicant serves on the EC. TMC meets virtually a minimum of 3 times yearly.

Knowledge Mobilization Committee (KMC)

KMC is coordinated by a Co-Applicant (elected biennially), one post-doc, and one graduate student (elected yearly). It also consist of 2 regular members elected biennially, one from a non-academic Partner. KMC seeks mobilization opportunities in traditional, popular, and social media, including conferences, journals, magazines, digital tools, exhibitions, lecture concerts, and pedagogical animations for young viewers with an eye toward diversifying the output across cultures. It also consults on the development of the TOR. KMC coordinators are responsible for the success of the mobilization activities, tracking key performance indicators, and report to the EC, on which the coordinating CA serves. KMC meets virtually a minimum of 3 times yearly.

Equity, Diversity & Inclusion Committee (EDIC)

EDIC is coordinated by PCD Hasegawa, who has extensive experience leading EDI initiatives at McGill, and draws on support from McGill’s central Equity Team. The 6-member committee comprises Co-applicants, Collaborators, Post-docs, and students, with a rotating aggregation of one member of TONE Central, and 4 members drawn from Partner institutions (i.e., not McGill), thus ensuring equitable and responsible stewardship of TONE’s EDI mandate. This mandate involves developing an EDI plan for TONE’s cross-cultural and transdisciplinary research agenda and ensuring that this plan is well understood by TONE’s membership and upheld in all research conducted by TONE. The EDIC (alongside senior TONE members with specialized expertise designated as EDI champions) is a resource for best practices on anti-racism, conflict resolution, and engagement with artist-researchers from underrepresented groups (for which the committee will avail itself of training offered by McGill and Partner institutions’ central EDI offices). EDIC meets virtually a minimum of 3 times yearly.
