Language Proficiency


Undergraduate

Some students may be asked to demonstrate an adequate level of English Language Proficiency prior to admission to McGill regardless of citizenship status or country of origin.

Graduate – M.Sc. (A) in Couple and Family Therapy

Since English is the primary language of instruction and communication at McGill, some applicants might be required to demonstrate an adequate level of English proficiency prior to admission to the M.Sc.(A) in Couple and Family Therapy program. Graduate - MSW & PhD Program

Applicants to graduate studies whose mother tongue is not English, and who have not completed an undergraduate or graduate degree from a recognized foreign institution where English is the language of instruction or from a recognized Canadian institution (anglophone or francophone), must submit documented proof of competency in oral and written English. Before acceptance, appropriate exam results must be submitted directly to McGill (Institution Code: 0935) from the TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) or IELTS (International English Language Testing Systems) Office. An institutional version of the TOEFL is not acceptable. Applications will not be considered if a TOEFL or IELTS test result is not available.

* Each individual component of reading, writing, listening, and speaking must have a minimum score of 24.

  • The International English Language Testing System (IELTS) – International applicants must achieve a minimum overall band score of 8.0**.

** Each individual component of reading, writing, listening, and speaking must have a minimum score of 7.5.

  • McGill Certificate of Proficiency in English or McGill Certificate of Proficiency – English for Professional Communication: Certificate of Proficiency awarded.

Exemptions

Applicants who have completed a degree program at universities in the following countries may be exempt from showing proof of proficiency in English.
