Field Placement Requirements

  • Students must complete 520 hours (260 hours per semester) of field placement. Students must stay until the end of the course date, regardless of hours accrued.
  • Students are at one field placement for 2.5 days a week (Tuesdays & Thursdays & Fridays) from September until mid-April.
  • Agency meetings and obligations might require the student to work an evening or alternate time (students are not required to work beyond the required hours).

Field Matching

The Field Placement Coordinator uses the following criteria to place students:
  • interest and preference for a particular field of practice
  • work, training, or volunteer experiences
  • learning objectives & style
  • learning needs as assessed by Field Coordinator.
  • student/placement fit (student can meet the agency requirements, no conflicts of interest)

The school supports the requirements of some agencies for a criminal records check, various health tests, x-rays, or inoculations. Students unwilling to meet these requirements will not be eligible for these placements.

Field Placement Procedures

The process of assignment to a field setting for QY students at the point of acceptance into the program. Students are asked to follow these procedures:
  1. Accepted students are emailed a list of agency profiles that students review.
  2. Students submit a completed Field Planning Form, along with a Curriculum Vitae to the Field Placement Coordinator (email, mail, or in  person).
  3. Students will schedule an individual meeting with the Field Coordinator to discuss learning goals, field matching, and possible field placement options. Students will bring a copy of their CV and the Field Planning Form to this  meeting.
    • A telephone interview can be arranged for those students unable to be in Montreal
  4. Students will receive a Field Match and Interview Report. This report will include the proposed field placement and Field Instructor/Supervisor.
  5. The identified Field Instructor/Supervisor must be contacted within two days and an interview set up as soon as possible. The student may lose the placement interview if the agency is not contacted and an interview set up in a timely manner. If students have difficulty contacting the field supervisor, they should contact the franice.granner [at] mcgill.ca (Field Placement Coordinator) as soon as possible.
  6. Students attend an interview with the Field Instructor/Supervisor.
  7. If both student and field instructor agree to the match, the student and field instructor complete the “Field Match” form and return it to the Field Education office.
  8. If the student and field instructor do not agree to the match, the student must contact the Field Coordinator to explore other options.
