MSWQY Program Field Placements
Field placements provide opportunities for students to apply theories and skills in a practice setting. Under the supervision of the McGill MSWQY Field Coordinator and a qualified field instructor from a social services agency, department, or organization, students gain practical experience working with diverse communities and populations.
Expectations
- The MSWQY field practice courses are taken in the winter term (January-April), four days a week on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays for a minimum of 450 field placement hours including 40 hours of in class or online field practice seminars.
- Students are expected to be functional in French (comprehension, spoken and written) for the field placement components of the MSWQY program. Many field placements require a high level of French.
- The 30-credit MSWQY program requires a total of 9 credits for field practice. The required course numbers are SWRK 322, 323 and 420.
- Students must be registered for field courses while they are doing their field placement. This is necessary for both liability insurance reasons and grading purposes.
- Not all social service agencies, departments, or organizations offer MSWQY field placements.
- Students must be prepared to travel at least one hour to the field placement site.
- The School of Social Work cannot guarantee specific placements or locations.
- MSWQY students are not permitted to complete their field placement in an out of province social services agency, department, or organization.
- MSWQY students are not permitted to complete their field placement in an agency in which they are employed.
- Students will work with the MSWQY Field Placement Coordinator throughout the field placement process.
