Black Student Librarian Fellowship Program

The Black Student Librarian Fellowship Program offers the opportunity for a Black student to pursue a Master of Information Studies (MISt) degree at McGill University and to work part-time as a student librarian (or archivist) at the McGill University Libraries. This initiative is a partnership between the McGill School of Information Studies, and the McGill University Libraries.

Eligibility

The program is open to students with Quebec residency status. Students must also be accepted into the Master of Information Studies (MISt) program at McGill University and begin their studies in the Fall 2026 term.

Objectives of the Black Student Librarian Fellowship program:

• To support a Black student in obtaining a master’s degree in the field of library and information studies while gaining practical library work experience.
• To foster a culture of diversity and inclusion among members of the library team.
• To offer the opportunity for a Black student to contribute to the McGill Libraries and to the wider McGill community.
• To provide the student with a wide exposure to the range of activities in an academic library setting including the opportunity to work in reference, instruction, special collections, library technology, and on special projects. Placements will be made in an area of professional interest to the Fellow and that address an area of need in the host library.
• To allow the student the opportunity to develop experience in areas of interest to begin a successful career in academic librarianship or archives.

The program is two years in length. It is expected that the Black student librarian will complete their master’s degree within that time.

Features of the MISt program of study to award recipients

• MISt degree tuition is funded by the School of Information Studies for two years.
• Access to all support services for Black students at McGill.

Features of the practical work experience program for award recipients

• A part-time paid position in the McGill University Library (downtown or Macdonald campus). The position entails a guarantee of 15 hours of work per week from September to April. The rate of pay is currently @22.11/hour.
• Supervision and mentorship by professional librarians.
• Support from programs and groups that are part of the Black Campus Community.

Applications

Eligible incoming students may apply before confirming acceptance of the MISt program. However, acceptance into the student librarian program is dependent upon the student enrolling full-time in a Master’s degree program leading to a MISt.

Application deadline: January 15^th 2026 (same as the MISt application deadline)

  • The statement should specify:
    • Your goals for the fellowship
    • Future plans in the field of library and information studies
    • A statement confirming your eligibility for the program
    • You may (optionally) also include one letter of recommendation from an instructor, supervisor (past or present), or a member of the community.

Stage pour étudiantes et étudiants noirs à la maîtrise en sciences de l’information

Programme de stage pour étudiantes et étudiants bibliothécaires noirs

Le Programme de stage pour étudiantes et étudiants bibliothécaires noirs offre à une personne étudiante noire la possibilité d’étudier à la maîtrise en sciences de l’information à l’Université McGill tout en travaillant à temps partiel comme bibliothécaire (ou archiviste) aux Bibliothèques de l’Université McGill. Ce programme est le fruit d’un partenariat entre l’École des sciences de l’information et les Bibliothèques de l’Université McGill.

Admissibilité

Le programme s’adresse aux personnes étudiantes qui ont le statut de résidentes du Québec, ont été admises au programme de maîtrise en sciences de l’information de l’Université McGill et commencent leurs études à la session d’automne 2026.

Objectifs du Programme de stage pour étudiantes et étudiants bibliothécaires noirs

• Aider une personne étudiante noire à obtenir un diplôme de maîtrise en bibliothéconomie et sciences de l’information, tout en lui permettant d’acquérir une expérience de travail en bibliothèque.
• Créer une culture de diversité et d’inclusion au sein des équipes des Bibliothèques.
• Offrir à une personne étudiante noire l’occasion de contribuer activement aux Bibliothèques de McGill ainsi qu’à l’ensemble de la communauté mcgilloise.
• Permettre à la personne choisie d’acquérir de l’expérience dans un large éventail d’activités propres aux bibliothèques universitaires : services de référence, formation documentaire, collections spéciales, technologies documentaires, projets spéciaux, etc. Les affectations sont déterminées en fonction des intérêts professionnels du ou de la stagiaire, et des besoins de la bibliothèque d’accueil.
• Donner à la personne étudiante l’occasion d’acquérir de l’expérience dans ses sphères d’intérêt, afin de poser les bases d’une carrière réussie en bibliothéconomie universitaire ou en archivistique.

Le programme s’échelonne sur une période de deux ans. La personne étudiante noire devrait terminer sa maîtrise dans ce délai.

Caractéristiques du programme de maîtrise en sciences de l’information pour les stagiaires

• Les droits de scolarité du programme de maîtrise en sciences de l’information sont entièrement pris en charge par l’École des sciences de l’information pour une durée de deux ans.
• Accès à l’ensemble des services de soutien offerts aux personnes étudiantes noires à l’Université McGill.

Caractéristiques du programme de stage

• Il s’agit d’un poste rémunéré à temps partiel aux Bibliothèques de l’Université McGill (campus du centre-ville ou campus Macdonald). Le ou la stagiaire travaillera au moins 15 heures par semaine, de septembre à avril. Le salaire actuel est 22,11 $ l’heure.
• L’encadrement et le mentorat sont assurés par des bibliothécaires professionnels.
• Un soutien est offert par des programmes et des groupes affiliés à la communauté noire du campus.

Candidatures

Les étudiantes et étudiants admissibles peuvent soumettre leur candidature avant de confirmer leur admission au programme de maîtrise en sciences de l’information. Toutefois, ils doivent être inscrits à temps plein à un programme de maîtrise en sciences de l’information pour être acceptés au Programme de stage pour étudiantes et étudiants bibliothécaires noirs.

Date limite de dépôt des candidatures : 15 janvier 2026 (également la date limite de dépôt des demandes d’admission au programme de maîtrise en sciences de l’information)

• Rédiger une déclaration d’intérêt pour le Programme de stage pour étudiantes et étudiants bibliothécaires noirs.
  • Cette déclaration doit préciser :
    • vos objectifs dans le cadre du stage;
    • vos projets dans le domaine de la bibliothéconomie et des sciences de l’information;
    • une déclaration confirmant que vous répondez aux critères d’admissibilité du programme;
    • vous pouvez également joindre une lettre de recommandation, rédigée par un enseignant, un superviseur (actuel ou ancien) ou un membre de la communauté (facultatif).
