Pediatric Neurology

The Division of Pediatric Neurology, based at the Montreal Children’s Hospital, was founded in the 1960s, and was among the first pediatric neurology divisions to be established in Canada.

Our division has a reputation both provincially and nationally for treating complex neurological disorders in children, and more specifically for our expertise in evaluating and treating intractable epilepsy, neurodevelopmental and genetic disorders, as well as multiple sclerosis, stroke, neuro-inflammatory conditions, and neuromuscular disorders, brain and nervous tumors – as well as other neuro-oncologic conditions.

Over the years, the division has received international recognition for its commitment to basic, clinical, epidemiological and qualitative research.

Clinical Activities

The Division of Pediatric Neurology of the Montreal Children’s Hospital provides care for children with challenging and complex neurological conditions.

We provide inpatient consultation on a 24/7 basis to all areas of the hospital including the medical and surgical wards, intensive care units and Emergency Department. We also provide consultation in a clinic setting to patients who are referred to us for the following categories of neurological illnesses: epilepsy or convulsive disorders that are not related to fever; neurodevelopmental disabilities (i.e. global developmental delay, intellectual disability, cerebral palsy, developmental language impairment), neuromuscular disorders, headaches that are resistant to treatment, complex movement disorders, neurogenetic, neurometabolic and neurocutaneous disorders, demyelinating disorders, multiple sclerosis, stroke, neuroinflammatory diseases, neuro-oncologic conditions, and high-risk survivors of the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) and Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU).

Research Activities

The Division of Pediatric Neurology has active clinical, translational and basic research programs in epilepsy, cerebral palsy, neurodevelopmental and neuromuscular disorders, as well as research projects into genetic and epigenetic factors acting on the central nervous system (CNS) development and health.

Clinical Teaching Activities

Members of the Division of Pediatric Neurology provide clinical teaching opportunities for child neurology trainees, medical students, residents (genetic, pediatrics, pedo-psychiatry), and neurology residents and fellows. Teaching is provided in outpatient general neurology and subspecialty clinics as well as on the emergency room and inpatient neurology consultation service (more than 50 consultation requests per week). The Division receives between 2 and 4 medical trainees per academic period usually consisting of 2 neurology residents, and 1 to 2 medical students (McGill or other universities). For information on our Pediatric Neurology Residency Program, please visit our Residency and Fellowship Programs page.

The Division of Pediatric Neurology conducts its own weekly Royal College approved divisional academic rounds. The weekly divisional rounds are supplemented by bi-weekly Comprehensive Epilepsy Rounds, bi-weekly EEG rounds, and weekly Neurology rounds (viewed via videoconference) from the Montreal Neurological Hospital. Multiple other rounds are available, including weekly Neuroradiology Teaching Rounds, bi-weekly CNS Tumor Boards, and bi-annual Mortality and Morbidity Rounds.
