The aim of the Primary Care Concentration is to prepare the primary health care nurse practitioner for this multifaceted role in community settings. The primary health care nurse practitioner is prepared to provide and/or collaborate in the provision of services designed to deal with the health care needs of patients of all ages and their families in a variety of primary care settings such as Family Medicine Groups (GMF), GMF-U, CLSC, long-term care facilities and patient homes. The focus is the development of expert clinical competence. The ability to function as an educator, consultant, collaborator, and care provider is essential to the development of clinical expertise. These areas are addressed within the curriculum. In Québec, the primary health care nurse practitioner corresponds with the title Infirmière praticienne spécialisée en soins de première ligne (IPSPL).
For additional information on the Primary Care NP scope of practice, visit the OIIQ’s Pratique clinique de l’infirmière praticienne spécialisée en soins de première ligne document (available in French).
The McGill Ingram School of Nursing Primary Care Nurse Practitioner Concentration has been in existence since 2008, having received a full 5-year program accreditation by the Ordre des Infirmières et Infirmiers du Québec/Collège des Médecins du Québec in 2016.

Clinical Practicum, Primary Care Nurse Practitioner Internships
By the end of the program, the student will have completed 950 hours of clinical practicum. The primary care nurse practitioners and family physicians do the supervision of students in the clinical setting. There are currently a variety of clinical sites (GMF-U, GMF, CLSC and CHSLD) with many different populations (refugees, immigrants, urban populations, rural populations, etc.).
In addition to the clinical practicum, there are approximately 50 hours of simulation offered to the students to practice particular clinical procedures and assessment skills.
Employment Opportunities
Graduates of the Primary Health Care Nurse Practitioner program can practice in a variety of settings from a CLSC, Family Medicine Group (GMF), GMF-U, to a patient’s home or a long-term care facility. In Quebec, the ministerial plan to integrate 2,000 nurse practitioners by the year 2025 has led to the creation of a number of positions for primary care nurse practitioners.
