The aim of the Adult Care Nurse Practitioner concentration is to prepare the adult care nurse practitioner for a multifaceted role in settings where specialised and ultra specialized adult care is provided. These settings include hospitals, specialised outpatient clinics and certain complex homecare services. The adult care nurse practitioner works specifically with the adult population (aged 14 and over) with complex acute, chronic or critical care issues. The focus is the development of expert clinical competence and leadership. The ability to function as an educator, consultant, collaborator, and leader are integral parts of the Nurse Practitioner role. These competencies are developed throughout the curriculum. In Québec, the adult care nurse practitioner title is Infirmière praticienne spécialisée en soins aux adultes (IPSSA).)
For additional information on the Adult Care NP scope of practice, visit the Specialized Nurse Practitioners and Their Practice: Guidelines available on the Ordre des Infirmières et Infirmiers du Québec (OIIQ) website: https://www.oiiq.org/documents/20147/2943833/2530-np-guidelines-web.pdf (available in French and English).
The McGill University, Ingram School of Nursing Adult Care Nurse Practitioner concentration is one of three training programs in the province of Québec.
