The aim of the Neonatal NP concentration is to prepare the neonatal nurse practitioner for a multifaceted role in ambulatory, intermediate and critical care settings. The neonatal nurse practitioner is prepared to provide, and/or collaborate in the provision of services, designed to deal with the health care needs of neonates and their families. The focus is the development of expert clinical competence and leadership. The ability to function as an educator, consultant, collaborator, and leader are integral parts of the Nurse Practitioner role. These competencies are developed throughout the curriculum. In Québec, the Neonatal NP title is Infirmière praticienne spécialisée en néonatalogie (IPSNN).
For additional information on the Neonatal NP scope of practice, visit the Specialized Nurse Practitioners and Their Practice: Guidelines available on the Ordre des Infirmières et Infirmiers du Québec (OIIQ) website: https://www.oiiq.org/documents/20147/2943833/2530-np-guidelines-web.pdf (available in French and English).
The McGill University, Ingram School of Nursing Neonatal NP concentration is one of two such training programs in the province of Quebec, and only one of two training programs in the country. The program has been in existence since 2004, having received a full 5-year program accreditation by the Ordre des Infirmières et Infirmiers du Québec in 2018.
IMPORTANT MESSAGE TO PROSPECTIVE NEONATAL NP STUDENTS:
