Adult Care Nurse Practitioner Concentration

The aim of the Adult Care Concentration is to prepare the adult care nurse practitioner for this multifaceted role in settings where specialised and ultra specialized adult care is provided. These settings include hospitals, specialised outpatient clinics and certain complex services at home. The adult care nurse practitioner works specifically with the adult population (aged 14 and over) with complex acute, chronic or critical care issues. The focus of the program is the development of expert clinical competence and leadership. The ability to function as an educator, consultant, collaborator, and leader are integral parts of the Nurse Practitioner role. These competencies are developed throughout the curriculum. In Québec, the adult care nurse practitioner title is that of Infirmière praticienne spécialisée en soins aux adultes (IPSSA).)

For additional information on the Adult Care NP scope of practice, visit the OIIQ’s Pratique clinique de l’infirmière praticienne spécialisée en soins aux adultes document (available in French).

The McGill Ingram School of Nursing (ISoN) Adult Care Nurse Practitioner Concentration is one of three training programs in the province of Québec. The ISoN is accepting applications for Fall 2021 for nurses with a Bachelor in nursing degree (application deadline April 15th) and for Winter 2022 for nurses with a Master’s in nursing degree (application deadline is May 15th, 2021).

Application Process

Consult our Applications to Graduate Programs page for more information and detailed instructions regarding program-specific requirements.

Deadline for application:
The deadline for Fall 2021 admission (Bachelor-entry) is April 15, 2021
The deadline for Winter 2022 admission (Master’s-entry) is May 15, 2021.

Clinical Practicum, Adult Care Nurse Practitioner Internship

By the end of the program, the student will have completed 950 hours of clinical practicum. The supervision of students in the clinical setting is provided by nurse practitioners, physicians and advanced practice nurses. Clinical internships expose the student to a variety of medical specialties and take place in hospital and in specialty outpatient clinics.

Employment Opportunities

Graduates of the Adult Care Nurse Practitioner program can practice in acute care (hospital-based units) and outpatient clinics with clients requiring specialized or ultra-specialized care. In Quebec, the ministerial plan to integrate 2,000 nurse practitioners by the year 2025 has led to the creation of a number of positions for adult care nurse practitioners.
