Welcome to the McGill Family Medicine R2Plus Program

Program Overview

Amid evolving societal needs and an increasingly complex medical landscape, the four Quebec medical schools have decided to pilot extensions to their core family medicine training programs. McGill’s contribution to this initiative is R2Plus, a six-month program developed in response to the CFPC’s call for curriculum renewal, and grounded in our local family medicine communities. 


Joint Commitment from Quebec Family Medicine Programs

The McGill Department of Family Medicine, together with its three counterparts in Quebec and with the support of the Québec Ministry of Health and Social Services (MSSS), recognizes the need to strengthen family medicine training for the future by expanding the duration and scope of residency education:  

Les médecins de famille des prochaines décennies devront offrir des soins complets et globaux dans une perspective de polyvalence et de généralisme, prendre soin des communautés moins desservies, et être compétents dans les domaines où les besoins sociétaux sont prioritaires tel que les soins à domicile et de longue durée, la santé mentale et la toxicomanie, la santé autochtone, l’équité en santé, les soins d’urgence et les technologies en santé. Les médecins de famille sont des spécialistes de la complexité et ont un rôle unique à jouer au sein des équipes interprofessionnelles.  

À notre avis, il est tout simplement impossible d’apporter les changements et les ajouts nécessaires pour former le médecin de famille du futur sans augmenter la durée de la formation.

CFPC Goals of Training

The College of Family Physicians of Canada has stipulated that graduates should be:

  • Prepared and confident to begin comprehensive family practice anywhere in Canada, in keeping with the CFPC certification as a national credential [Preparedness, Mobility, Adaptability]
  • Prepared for the full scope of the discipline as defined by the RTP [Comprehensiveness]
  • Able to work more sustainably as part of an interprofessional team and across a variety of setting-based care as part of a commitment to professional well-being starting in residency [Professional well-being]
  • Capable of making a difference in the lives of their patients and communities, effectively working with those who are systematically disadvantaged and underserved [Social accountability]
  • Skilled to meet changing societal needs in specific areas of priority [Social accountability]:
    • Home and long-term care
    • Addiction and mental health
    • Emergency/acute care medicine
    • Indigenous health
    • Health equity and anti-racism
    • Virtual care and health informatics

The R2Plus program is informed by these goals of training.
