FAQ

Who should consider R2Plus?

R2Plus is well suited to residents looking to ease their transition to independent practice and strengthen their leadership and teaching abilities in comprehensive family medicine. If you're looking to consolidate and enrich your expertise, develop new competencies, and broaden your clinical and professional experience, this program is for you.

When does the program start?

The R2Plus pilot will begin July 1st, 2027.

What if I’m graduating after June 30th 2026?

No problem. If you are graduating after June 30th, you can join the program as soon as you finish.

How does R2Plus differ from the core program?

Because of its unique purpose and structure, R2Plus differs from the core residency program in several important ways:

Core Program

R2Plus

Academic curriculum is tailored to the CFPC exam, to the 105 priority topics

Academic curriculum is designed to ease the transition to practice: formal training offered in leadership, scholarship, and the acquisition of new skills

Opportunities for teaching are limited and voluntary.

As a senior resident, you will have many opportunities to teach peers and junior learners.

Clinical activities are designed to impart the skills necessary to be a competent family physician and to pass the CFPC certification exam

Clinical activities are designed to encourage the enrichment and consolidation of skills, and to respond to priority and emerging areas of societal need

Residents require relatively close supervision: one field note per half-day

Residents are near-independent physicians with plenty of autonomy: one field note per week

How does R2Plus differ from other options available to me after graduation (Enhanced Skills program, extension of training)?

Please consult this comparison table to see the differences:

What if I want to take both my half-day electives in the same clinic?

No problem. If your clinical experience would be best served by a full day per week in one clinic rather than two half-days in two separate clinics, that’s perfectly fine.

Where do half-day electives take place?

The half-day electives can be taken either at the GMF-U (yours or another), or at any teaching site approved by the CMQ for postgraduate medical training in Quebec.

For training of any duration (even a half-day) outside McGill, residents must make a request for an inter-university rotation. Please note requests for training outside McGill must be received at least two months in advance.

Can I still apply for a PTEM?

Yes. Go ahead and apply for your PTEM as though you were starting practice immediately after graduation. If you are accepted to the R2Plus program, you can simply defer your PTEM acceptance.

Can I work as an independent physician while enrolled in the R2Plus Program?

Yes. Conditions for moonlighting are outlined in the PGME Moonlighting Policy, found here.
