Restauranteurs and entrepreneurs around the world are heeding the call for more sustainable food sources. Among them is the Aspire Food Group, which has recently doubled its production of crickets for human consumption at its Texas farm.

And they are not the only ones to recognise the value of insects as food. The edible bug business is booming, with a global market of $33 million in 2015, according to the research firm Global Market Insights, which expects it to grow 40 percent by 2023.

Richard Despatie (BCom’16) has been named to the National Honour Roll of the Common Final Exam (CFE). He is among the top-three writers in Ontario of the Common Final Exam.

Written in September, the CFE is a national three-day evaluation that assesses competencies including essential knowledge, professional judgment, ethics, and the ability to communicate.

With nearly three-quarters of employers planning to hire recent college graduates in 2017, the highest rate since 2007, a recent article lists the eleven most sought-after skills that students should try to master before entering the job market.

Occupying the fifth position on this list are leadership skills, which are best developed through volunteer work, according to Professor Karl Moore.

Other skills listed are: written communication, creative thinking, and teamwork.

Last March, a group comprised of Desautels students hosted the inaugural Empower McGill conference, which promoted the benefits of disability inclusion in the workforce.

Since then, the initiative has earned the first prize in the Mutual Aid, Peace and Justice category of this year’s Forces Avenir awards. With plans already underway to host another conference in January, the organizers are again looking to empower students with disabilities who are looking ahead to their future careers.
