As part of the fourth cohort of McCall MacBain International Fellows, eight McGill students have been selected to spend a fully funded year abroad to study, live and work in a new country, including BCom student Jennifer Shi. Originally from Ottawa, Ontario, Shi, who serves as Co-President of the Junior Hong Kong-Canada Business Association, a Junior Team Canada Ambassador at Global Vision, and a member of the Canada China Forum, will be spending a year learning Korean in South Korea.

Shadow banking is playing an increasing role in the financial system. Private equity firms, investment funds and mortgage finance companies all employ alternative lending strategies that are lightly regulated, and Canada’s Office of the Superintendent of Financial Institutions is concerned about how much exposure Canada’s banks have to this type of lender, who are collectively known as non-bank financial intermediaries. Their lending is sometimes backed by derivatives, and if their value falls, the loan collateral could be jeopardized.
