The Career Development Office organizes a wide variety of events to help you explore career options, meet employers, develop professional and career development skills, and prepare for applications and interviews.
CDO events are advertised in the biweekly newsletter and posted in 12Twenty. Please sign up in 12Twenty for the events you plan to attend.
Workshops and seminars
The CDO is often assisted at its presentations by students, and many of these events are attended by alumni and other guests working in a variety of types of practice and in non-practising positions. Watch the CDO newsletter and 12Twenty for details.
The first session, which all students should plan to attend, is an introduction to the CDO and career planning for first-year students, held in the fall.
Plusieurs événements tenus chaque année—souvent conjointement avec des groupes étudiants—informent les étudiants sur les possibilités de carrière et les champs de pratique qui existent. Par exemple, de récentes conférences ont porté sur le travail d’avocat-conseiller (in-house counsel), sur le droit criminel et sur la diversité et l’inclusion. Lors de cette dernière conférence, des recruteurs ont discuté des programmes de promotion de la diversité et de l’inclusion existant dans leur entreprise et le marché juridique.
The CDO also offers general career development workshops on CVs and cover letters, interview skills, and networking and self-directed job search skills, which will be of value to students planning to take part in any recruitment process.
Enfin, le CDP organise divers évènements pour préparer les étudiants aux processus de recrutement organisé, parmi lesquels :
- Course aux stages information sessions
- Introductions to articling and summer recruitment, held each March
- US, Toronto, Ottawa and Vancouver / Calgary summer recruitment information sessions and panels
- Clerkship and Graduate Studies information sessions
- Quebec and Ontario Bar information sessions.
Career Days
Career Days provide students with information about a broad range of traditional and non-traditional ways to use a law degree, both in and out of the practice of law. In the past, participating employers staffed information booths where lawyers could tell you about their organization and answer your questions. More recently, the events have become more interactive, with opportunities to meet with employers individually or in small groups.
Information about these events will be circulated in the CDO newsletter and posted in 12Twenty.
Journée Carrières: Employeurs québécois
Tous les mois de janvier, les employeurs québécois rencontrent les étudiants pour leur présenter les possibilités de carrière auprès de leur organisme. Ces employeurs recrutent par la Course aux stages ou par d’autres moyens d’embauche pendant et après le baccalauréat en droit.
Common Law Career Day / Ottawa Career Day
The Ottawa Career Day in November and the Common Law Career Day in April feature panels and "coffee chats" at which students can meet with employers in small groups and ask questions.
Journée Carrières en intérêt public
Cet événement, habituellement tenu en novembre et organisé conjointement avec le groupe d'action en matière de droits de la personne (HRWG), informe les étudiants des possibilités de carrière en intérêt public, droits humains et droit international. Cet évènement est l’occasion de rencontrer à leur kiosque différents organismes et d’assister à des conférences sur des sujets relatifs à l’intérêt public.
On-campus interviews
On-campus interviews (OCIs) are short, preliminary interviews with Toronto, Ottawa and US summer employers (held in Montreal) and Vancouver and Calgary summer employers (held in Toronto with the Ontario law schools). Second interviews with these employers, and with others recruiting at the same time that do not take part in OCIs, take place at the employers’ offices. Student-organized events
Le CDP tient à soutenir les initiatives étudiantes en lien avec le développement professionnel et les possibilités de carrière. Le CDP demande aux clubs et aux organisateurs d’événements de les tenir informé des événements pertinents.
We will promote your event in the newsletter. In some cases the CDO can also provide limited funding, although we encourage you to investigate all the avenues for funding available on campus, including through the Law Students' Association.
The CDO asks that its support of an event be mentioned in all communications and advertisements by the student group.
