PopAging DataViz Workshop 2024

October 22-24, 2024

This is a FREE, hands-on, and interactive workshop on data visualization in R. Anyone interested in learning how to produce and present visualizations from population research, data, or models is welcome to participate. Please fill out the registration details at the bottom of this page if you interested in participating.  

Ahead of the workshop, there will be a mandatory VIRTUAL pre-workshop set-up session on October 16 from 11:15am - 1:00pm. The zoom link for this will be sent to registrants once then have completed the registration form. 

Training topics will include using packages such as ggplot, tidycensus, cancensus, leaflet, mapview, and ggdag, adding complexity to initial plots, animations, and interactivity. There will be demonstration and exercise periods throughout the three days to both learn and practice the skills gained. 

The PopAging DataViz Workshop is one of the SKILLS modules of the CAnD3 Population Analytics in an Aging Society Training Program. The Workshop is being co-hosted by CAnD3 and our partners at Florida State University, including the Pepper Institute on Aging & Public Policy, the Center for Demography & Population Health, and the College of Social Sciences & Public Policy. CAnD3 is hosted at McGill University and supported in part by funding from the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada (SSHRC).

Prerequisites 

It is recommended that you have taken an introductory R course or have basic knowledge of R commands. But fear not if you do not. We will share resources with participants to review before the workshop. 


Instructor 

Sakeef Karim, PhD

Sakeef M. Karim is an Assistant Professor of Sociology at Amherst College. Before joining Amherst, he was a SSHRC Postdoctoral Research Fellow in the Department of Sociology at New York University. He holds a PhD in Sociology from McGill University, an MA in Sociology from McMaster University, and an HBSc in Psychology from the University of Toronto.

His research employs a variety of quantitative and computational methods to explore social, political, and cultural phenomena from a comparative perspective. His interests span topics such as ethnic identification and cultural transmission among immigrants, as well as the relationship between democracy, populism, and nationalism in contemporary society.

His work has been supported by the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada (SSHRC) and has been published in top journals like the American Sociological ReviewSocial Forces, and Social Science Research.
