Funding & Awards

This page contains information on stipends, graduate fees, fellowship funding and awards/prizes.

Your funding will be outlined in the letter of offer.

There are also a few Teaching Assistantships (TAs) available for students in the program. A call for TAs is sent out each semester.

Stipends

All thesis Master’s and Doctoral students are guaranteed support under our minimum-stipend policy, described below. Some students with fellowships and awards may receive significantly more funding.

Master’s Students (thesis)

Domestic, out-of-province and international students: Funding is guaranteed for 2 years at a minimum of $24,000/year.

Higher stipends are encouraged for international and out-of-province graduate students to compensate for their higher tuition fees.

Notes:

(1): Students starting at PhD1 have funding guaranteed for 4 years.

(2): Students starting at PhD2 have funding guaranteed for 3 years.

(3): Tuition fees are estimated based on an anticipated 3% increase yearly.

(4): Students are responsible to pay ancillary fees and insurance.

(5): Tuition fees are covered by the Faculty of Engineering for PhD2–PhD4 students whose supervisors are appointed in the Faculty. (Supervisors cover tuition fees for the first year of students entering as PhD1.)

Master’s Students (non-thesis)

Students are expected to cover tuition and other fees themselves.

Internships are normally financially supported by partner organizations and might be supported through the Mitacs program External link.

Fellowships

For thesis Master's and Doctoral applicants, eligibility for funding depends on your primary supervisor’s affiliation, as outlined in the table below.

How to Apply

Applicants should apply well ahead of the admissions deadline.  It is strongly encouraged to contact a potential supervisor to discuss funding.

The supervisor must nominate the applicant.  Engineering fellowship application deadline is January 15 for Fall entry, and October 15 for Winter entry

For Recruitment and Excellence Awards, the supervisor must nominate the applicant.
