McGill Concrete Toboggan

General information

Toboggan 2006

The Great Northern Concrete Toboggan Race (GNCTR) involves the design, construction and performance of a concrete toboggan. The teams are required to present a technical paper outlining their designs, which are then evaluated at a technical exposition where the teams must present their toboggans for inspection by experts and the public. The event culminates with the actual race, where the toboggan must carry five team members down a snow-packed track.

The first GNCTR was held near Red Deer, Alberta, in 1974, with four schools from Alberta competing. The current tradition is that the competition must be held in Canada, alternating yearly between western provinces (British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba) and eastern provinces (the rest), and the responsibilities of hosting the following year's GNCTR are offered to the overall current champion, provided they are in a geographically suitable location.
