Pediatric Critical Care

The Division of Pediatric Critical Care offers state-of-the-art care using a multidisciplinary team approach for critically ill or injured neonates, children and adolescents. The unit is a major provincial, national and international referral center.

Services include complex congenital cardiovascular surgery, seizure and tumor neurosurgery, craniofacial reconstruction, complex orthopedic surgery, tracheal reconstructive surgery, level 1 trauma, extracorporeal life support, high frequency ventilation, nitric oxide program, and solid organ transplantation.

History

The Pediatric Intensive Care Unit of the Montreal Children’s Hospital was one of the earliest in Canada to attract dedicated critical care trained specialists in the 1980s. Pediatric critical care medicine as a specialty grew out of the recognition that the management of acute pediatric critical illness requires special expertise and skills.

Our Division is interdisciplinary and interprofessional, providing intense highly complex care to children in many of the hospital’s programs, including cardiac surgery, complex neurosurgery, otolaryngology and trauma. In addition, we receive transfers of acutely critically ill children from all over Quebec, as well as our own emergency room and hospital wards.

Research

The physicians in our unit have a wide variety of research interests, with particular strengths in knowledge translation, quality improvement patient safety, health systems, and health professions education. We have particular strengths in nursing research, as well. There are several competitive grants currently being administered within our unit, for research of high quality, which seeks to answer important clinical questions.
