Subspecialty Residency Program

The Pediatric Hematology-Oncology Subspecialty Residency Program at McGill University, based at the Montreal Children's Hospital, is a three year program accredited by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada. Over the course of three years, residents will have 6-9 months of relevant clinical laboratory training. There is a strong commitment and involvement in clinical and fundamental research.

The Montreal Children's Hospital moved to a brand new facility, the Glen Site, in May 2015. A significant advantage of this new site is the proximity of the adult cancer centre, radiotherapy unit, and basic science research building facilitating increased learning opportunities. Our new inpatient HEPA filtered unit has 12 beds including those used for bone marrow transplant. Immediately adjacent to the in-patient unit is the ambulatory care facility with an on-site oncology pharmacy and an 8 bed day treatment unit. Anaesthesia support is provided for oncology procedures under general anesthetic. We have ready access to a full range of diagnostic laboratory testing and state-of-the-art imaging studies, including two MRI’s, one of which is intra-operative. There are strong and cordial interactions with colleagues in other departments with whom we work with frequently such as surgery, pathology, anaesthesia. Patients and families receive support from nurses and allied health services (psychology, nutrition, child life, music and massage therapists, and pastoral care to name a few) and there is a dedicated palliative care service. All patients with malignant disease are considered for enrolment in clinical trials. We are active members in the Children’s Oncology Group and many industry trials available as well. We have a large sickle cell and thalassemia program, a provincially recognized comprehensive hemophilia/hemostasis program, and we treat a broad range of benign hematologic conditions.
