Degree advisers & Arts OASIS
The Faculty of Arts Office of Advising and Student Information Services (OASIS) is the office that houses the Faculty’s degree advisers. Degree advisors (sometimes referred to as "Faculty advisors") are experts in University and Faculty regulations and the degree requirements for the Bachelor of Arts.
Reach out if you have questions about:
- Foundation program requirements
- Degree requirements and planning
- Academic standing
- University and Faculty regulations
- Study away/exchange
- Final exam issues
- Interfaculty transfers
- Readmission
Program advisers
Program advisors, located in their respective academic units or departments (e.g. the advisor for Anthropology programs is located in the Department of Anthropology) are experts in the requirements of their department's programs and courses. Each major, minor, honours, joint honour and interfaculty program at McGill has a program advisor.
Connect with a program advisor if you have questions about:
- Program requirements (majors, minors, etc.)
- Courses offered in their unit/department
- Course registration issues (e.g. requesting permission to register for a course that is full or has restrictions)
- Careers in a specific field of study
- Getting the most out of your program
- Graduate school in your field
As a student enrolled in the Faculty of Arts you are expected to be aware of the Faculty regulations as stated in Course Catalogue and on the McGill, Arts, and OASIS websites. While departmental and faculty advisers and staff are always available to give advice and guidance, the ultimate responsibility rests with you for such things as: completeness and correctness of course selection and registration; for compliance with, and completion of, program and degree requirements; and for the observance of regulations and deadlines. It is your responsibility to seek guidance from the Office of Advising and Student Information Services (OASIS) if in any doubt; misunderstanding or misapprehension will not be accepted as cause for dispensation from any regulation, deadline, program, or degree requirement.
Note to Parents/Guardians
Per Québec privacy laws and given our advising mandate to students - in support of building a student's independence and resiliency - the Arts OASIS will only interact with the student themselves when advising and with regard to their McGill record. Meetings with students are confidential, and participation by parents and third parties is discouraged. Advisors cannot discuss the details of a student's situation with a parent / third party present. Should the student permit a parent / third party to remain in their meeting, the student's file will not be discussed, and the parent / third party may attend as a silent participant only.
