Immunization/Vaccination, Basic Cardiac Life Support Standards

Compulsory immunization program

Healthcare program students are required by law to submit proof of vaccination before starting the first year of their program. McGill University uses the standards of the Quebec Ministry of Health and Social Services "Programme d'immunization du Québec PIQ" in order to ensure the safety of students and patients.  Admitted students will be provided with instructions and will have access to a secure form to upload their documents for verification. Students are responsible for maintaining compliance with all McGill and government requirements during their studies as a matter of professional responsibility.

The detailed requirements are revised each year; the most recent version is provided here for information only: File MDCM Immunization form_English

Students are advised that in order to participate in 3rd and 4th year elective clerkship courses at Canadian medical schools outside Quebec, they may be required to complete additional requirements according to the AFMC.

Basic Cardiac Life Support Certification (BCLS)

Admitted students must provide proof of certification in cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), level C (the course must cover both adults and children), and automated external defibrillation (AED) training. Certification must be valid until at least the start date of the program. Students are responsible for maintaining valid certification for the duration of the program.

Please note that fully online CPR/AED courses are not acceptable. Exceptionally, the theory portion of the course may be completed online, followed by an in-person practical session (hybrid course).

Validity

Certification must be granted, or fully recognized, by any of the following organizations:

  • Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada
  • Canadian Red Cross
  • Canadian Ski Patrol
  • St. John Ambulance Canada
  • Standard First AID/AED/Lifesaving Society of Quebec
  • The American Heart Association
  • The American Red Cross
