Delft, Netherlands

Vermeer’s birthplace and a true gem, Delft sits between The Hague and Rotterdam in the country’s southwest. The city’s name comes from the Dutch word for digging, fitting since canals are a highlight here. Others include the 13th-century Old Church, the 15th-century New Church and the Prinsenhof, once home to William of Orange and now a museum. Delft has long been a center for fine ceramics, and traditional hand painting methods can still be witnessed at Koninklijke Porceleyne Fles.

Discover Delft

Delft enjoys a worldwide reputation due to its connection with Johannes Vermeer, Delft Blue earthenware and the Royal House relive its glorious past as you wander along canals, churches, mansions and courtyards. This university town also offers canal tours, museums, markets and many pubs.

Delft Highlights

Find out how the world famous Delft Blue earthenware is produced at Royal Delft, the factory that has been producing the hand-painted, blue motives since the sixteenth century, and at Delft Pottery De Delftse Pauw, this family owned factory exclusively produces entirely hand-painted Delftware.

The Vermeer Center presents the life and works of painter Johannes Vermeer, master of light and creator of ‘The Girl with the Pearl Earring’. While the Old and New Church and ‘Prinsenhof’ explain the strong connection between Delft and the Dutch Royal House.

Just a 15 minute ride by bicycle from Delft city centre takes you to Delft University of Technology, also called TU Delft. Even if you don’t want to study here it’s worth taking a short ride around the campus. Delft University of Technology campus boasts several remarkable architectural works.

TU Delft Library

The library is the most notable building on campus. The grass-covered building has a rising volume pierced by a 42-metre cone. It was designed by Mecanoo architects (Francine Houben, Chirs de Weijer and Erick van Egeraat). Inside is a four-floor book cabinet and a large number of study places.

Architecture on the TU Campus

Other special architectural works at Delft University of Technology include:

The Auditorium:

This concrete building with a 15 metre awning can seat 1300. It makes the auditorium the biggest congress location in town.

BK City:

This building was designed in traditionalist style with Amsterdam School influences in 1920. When the Department of Architecture burnt down in 2008, the building was given a new purpose. It has since been transformed into an inspiring environment for students.
