Annals of Air and Space Law

The Annals of Air and Space Law is an academic journal produced by the Institute and Centre of Air and Space Law, Faculty of Law, McGill University, Montreal, Canada. Our ISSN is 0701-158X, and our publisher is William S. Hein & Co., Inc. of Getzville, New York, United States.

Aims and Scope

Since its beginnings in 1976, the Annals has taken a broad and visionary approach to air and space law scholarship. Our founder, Nicholas M. Matte, opened the Preface to Volume I with the following question:

“At a time when periodicals too often encounter difficulties of continuity and sometimes have to fade away, once the first enthusiasm and motivation lose momentum confronted by inevitable and aggravating financial conditions, one could wonder: why the Annals?”

Dr Matte’s answer to this question guides our work today:

the Annals answers to a real need for a scientific and objective publication where one will find confrontations of ideas about existing air and space legislation, suggestions how to solve emerging law from new techniques and useful information about structural and doctrinal developments. The world-wide nature of the inter-dependent consequences for all nations resulting from rules yet to be globally accepted ... oblige[s] mankind to strive relentlessly towards a world peace in the shadow of possible general destruction.”

Reflecting this vision, the Annals publishes original scholarship, drafted in English or French, across the entire spectrum of national and international air and space law. The contributors are academics and leading practitioners from all parts of the world. Available online, via HeinOnline, and in a bound hardcover, the Annals has become a standard source of reference in the fields of air and space law and will be found in most academic libraries, government and airline offices, and specialized law offices.

Overall, the Annals is global in relevance and truly international in scope. The Annals is devoted to fostering the free exchange of ideas and information pertaining to the law applicable to air and space activities, welcoming submissions that adopt doctrinal, theoretical, interdisciplinary, comparative, and other approaches to legal questions.
